How to Choose the Perfect Nursery Name Sign
Share
Designing a nursery is one of those projects that somehow feels both exciting and overwhelming. Between choosing a crib, finding the perfect paint color, picking bedding, and deciding what should go on the walls, there are a lot of little decisions that eventually come together to create one very special room.
One of our favorite ways to make a nursery feel truly personal is with a custom name sign.
A nursery name sign creates an instant focal point, fills some of that intimidating blank wall space, and—most importantly—makes the room feel like it belongs to your little one.
But with so many sizes, fonts, colors, styles, and layouts to choose from, how do you know which one is right for your nursery?
Here are a few things to consider.
1. Start With the Space
Before choosing your sign, think about where you plan to hang it.
The wall above the crib is one of the most popular locations for a nursery name sign, but signs can also look beautiful above a dresser, changing table, reading nook, or on a large empty wall.
Take a quick measurement of the available wall space before deciding on a size.
One important thing to remember is that nursery name signs are typically measured by their width. The final height can vary based on the name, font, and layout. A short name may appear taller than a very long name even when both signs are ordered at the same width.
2. Choose a Size That Fits the Furniture
Your sign should feel proportional to the furniture beneath it.
A tiny sign over a full-size crib can get lost, while a very large sign above a narrow dresser may overwhelm the space.
For a statement piece above a crib, larger name signs can create a beautiful focal point. Smaller sizes are perfect when the sign is being incorporated into a gallery wall or paired with other nursery decor.
When in doubt, use painter’s tape to mark the approximate width of the sign on your wall. It’s an incredibly simple way to visualize the size before ordering.
3. Decide What Style Fits Your Nursery
The great thing about personalized nursery decor is that it doesn’t have to fit into one particular aesthetic.
A natural wood sign can work beautifully in a neutral, woodland, rustic, or organic nursery.
Soft painted colors can complement traditional, floral, coastal, vintage, or pastel spaces.
Bold colors can make a name sign the centerpiece of a colorful or modern nursery.
At Two Avocados Signs, we offer several different styles of personalized name signs, including layered name signs, cutout names, round signs, framed signs, and macramé designs, so you aren’t limited to one look.
4. Don’t Be Afraid to Mix Fonts
Choosing fonts may be the hardest part—and the most fun.
For first-and-middle-name signs, pairing two different fonts can add dimension and personality to the design. A flowing script paired with a cleaner font is a classic combination because each name remains easy to read while still feeling custom.
If your nursery already contains several patterns or decorative elements, a simpler font combination can keep the room from feeling too busy.
For a more minimal nursery, the name sign can be the place to introduce a little extra personality.
5. Pull Colors From the Rest of the Room
You don’t necessarily need to match everything perfectly.
Instead, look for colors already appearing throughout the nursery and choose one or two to repeat in the name sign.
For example, you might pull a sage green from the crib sheet, a soft pink from the rug, or a warm neutral from the curtains.
Repeating colors throughout a space helps the finished nursery feel intentional—even if the pieces weren’t purchased together.
Natural wood is another great option because its warmth works with an enormous range of nursery color palettes.
6. Think Beyond the Baby Stage
Your baby’s nursery won’t always be a nursery.
One of the reasons we love personalized name signs is that they can transition surprisingly well into toddler rooms, big-kid bedrooms, and even playrooms.
If you’d like to keep the sign for years, consider choosing colors and fonts that can grow with your child rather than matching an extremely specific baby theme.
That doesn’t mean the sign needs to be boring. It simply means thinking about whether you’ll still love it once the crib becomes a bed.
7. Preview Your Design Before Ordering
Sometimes a font or color combination looks completely different once you see the names together.
That’s why previewing the design can be so helpful.
Try different combinations of fonts, colors, and layouts until you find the one that feels right for your space. Even small changes—like swapping the first and middle name fonts or changing one color—can completely change the personality of the finished sign.
